I have had time to look over your book from cover to cover, and I absolutely love it.  It’s welcoming, inviting, opening…   It begs us to get outdoors and enjoy such experiences!  The book itself is a glorious work of art, worthy of award and recognition along the Caldecott line.  As a homeroom teacher and also outdoor educator, I love the “recipes” for intriguing projects–activities that open the spirit and encourage exploration and discovery.

This delightful book with its artful layout and inspiring images offers a refreshing breeze in the other direction. It encourages art, music, poetry and creativity as ways to open children’s imaginations to the infinite possibilities of nature.

More importantly, it immerses children fully in nature so that it seeps into their being through every pore, every breath of fresh air and every magical moment where a boy or girl expresses their wonder and surprise with: “Wow!”

There is a no more formative age for instilling a deep love of the natural world than childhood and the authors of this book know that. Use this book for inspiration and expand on its ideas to create programs of your own. The key to success here is immersion. Get the kids outdoors with a little direction and watch their imaginations explode with possibilities. – Thom Henley, author of “Rediscovery” and “As If the Earth Matters”

As I finished reading ‘Actively Engaging Children in Nature’, the sun is streaming through our window and a gentle breeze blows the autumn leaves in the forest behind our house.
I truly enjoyed the experience of your book. Every child should have a chance to be amongst nature celebrating and creating with natural art materials.
A few notes I made as I was reading through -
  • simple, clear ideas
  • beautiful pictures capturing the children’s pure joy of being outside in their environment
  • inexpensive tools, many found right in nature
  • great lists of what you need to gather
  • great resource for educators and parents of children four years and up
  • I really enjoyed all of the quotes
